Resource Efficiency

The European Commission's roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe includes the aim to reduce resource inputs in food production 20% by 2020. Organic food and farming systems can play a leading role in meeting this challenge.

By avoiding the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, organic agriculture has proven to be 20% to 56% more efficient in terms of energy use and 64% more efficient in terms of CO2 emissions than the chemical-intensive industrial farming system. The IFOAM EU Group promotes the potential of organic agriculture as an efficient and sustainable farming system at EU level.
