Less and better: civil society calls for action on industrial animal farming

20 civil society organisations, including IFOAM EU, called on the European institutions to fundamentally change the currently unbalanced food and farming system. The organisations want the institutions to accelerate the transition towards more sustainable and healthier diets that are higher in plant-based food and contain less and better produced meat, dairy and eggs. Such a shift would be beneficial in the context of mitigating climate change and supporting environmentally friendly practices, improving animal and human health and welfare, as well as guaranteeing food security and supporting farmers’ livelihoods. The letter further stressed that farmers adopting more sustainable and higher animal welfare farming methods, e.g., organic farming, must be encouraged and rewarded. This letter finally calls on the EU institutions to carry out a “comprehensive assessment of the health and environmental impacts of the industrial animal farming sector and formulate clear policy recommendations”
