Internet of Food & Farm 2020 (IoF2020)
IoF2020 is a large-scale pilot under H2020 with 30 million budget that investigates and fosters a large-scale implementation of Internet of Things in the European farming and food sector. It will demonstrate the added value of smart webs of connected objects that are context-sensitive and can be identified, sensed and controlled remotely in the agri-food sector. 11 pilot cases are relevant for organic food & farming.
Cultivars adapted to organic systems are key for realising the full potential of organic agriculture in Europe. The objective of LIVESEED is to improve transparency and competitiveness of the organic seed and breeding sector and encourage greater use of organic seed. LIVESEED has 49 partners covering 18 European countries. The consortium includes multiple actors from: research institutes, breeding companies, seed companies, organic associations (farmers, processors, retailers) and national authorities.
NEFERTITI establishes 10 interactive thematic networks and brings together 45 regional clusters (hubs) of demo-farmers and related actors in 17 countries. NEFERTITI focuses on creating added value from the exchange of knowledge, actors, farmers and technical content between networks to boost innovation uptake and to improve peer to peer learning and network connectivity between farming actors across Europe. IFOAM EU is deputy leader of these themes: Robust organic livestock systems; Increasing productivity & quality in organic arable crops. Demonstrations are planned 2019-2021 in Germany, France, UK, Poland, Finland, Spain.
OK-Net Arable - Organic Knowledge Network Arable
The complexity of organic farming requires farmers to have a very high level of knowledge and skills. But exchange on organic farming techniques remains limited. Coordinated by IFOAM EU, the OK-Net Arable project promotes exchange of knowledge among farmers, farm advisers and scientists with the aim to increase productivity and quality in organic arable cropping all over Europe.
ReMIX will exploit the benefits of species mixtures to design more diversified and resilient agro-ecological arable cropping systems. Based on a multi-actor approach, ReMIX will produce new knowledge that is both scientifically credible and socially valuable in conventional and organic agriculture. The project will span from the specification of end-user needs and the co-design of in-field and on-farm experiments to demonstrations with evaluation of new varieties and practices. ReMIX will contribute to the adoption of productive and resilient agricultural systems.
XFactors - Xylella Fastidiosa Active Containment Through a Multidisciplinary Research Strategy
The project aims to establish a multidisciplinary research program to answer the urgent need to improve prevention, early detection and control of Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) disease. Recently, Xf was introduced into Italy, where it is causing severe damage to olive crops, and in France, where so far it is limited to ornamental plants and some landscape trees. The overall goal of the research program is to assess Xf potential to spread throughout EU territory, while maximizing its impact through a multifactor approach.
SOLMACC - Organic farmers countering climate change
Strategies for organic and low-input farming to mitigate and adapt to climate change (SOLMACC) is about demonstrating that farming can be climate-friendly by applying a combination of optimised organic farming practices to respond to climate change. Across Europe, 12 demonstration farms have been selected with farmers adjusting their agriculture techniques over the course of five years under close scientific monitoring and supervision. Modelling will allow for predictions about the long-term impact on soil, biodiversity and climate to be made with the project’s results used to develop transferable approaches for other farms, be they organic or conventional.
